A wild and cold day in Johnstone Strait.
Image

Full Moon.
On April 25th, we left Mound Bay, it was very cloudy, no wind as yet, we motored through Village Channel,Eliot Passage to Knight Inlet. We were aiming for Port Neville where i would have a good connection on my phone. But, we ended up anchoring in Boughey bay, we were hoping to see some bears here, but nothing as yet. The wind came up, SE, and because of the steep mountains around us ,williwaws blew down onto Curtsy, the diesel stove blew out , what a mess, boat full of smoke, alarms going off, it was at least 2 hours before i could get rid off the smell. So, no stove on tonight. We left on the 26th , Bert raised the Staysail, and we did a bit of sailing, but once we were in Johnstone Strait, all hell broke lose, wind on the nose, tide against us, took us quite a while to get to Port Neville. We anchor well into the bay, around the corner, to the right, well protected there, might see some bears here too…… didnt !!! The wind changed to NW , sun came out, and we decided to stay 2 nights, the second day we sat in the sun, and did some exploring, found a little beach , and really enjoyed ourselves. We had been making water every day, the watermaker does very well, and usually we make 24 gallons in a day.
beautiful forest, with Red Cedar, Sitka Spruce and Douglas Fir.

Slowly starting south…
We left on April 24th, no wind as yet in the morning, we motored into the Broughtons, and once the wind came up a bit, Bert raised the genoa and we sailed towards Whitebeach passage and were aiming for Mound Island and Mound Bay. Its beautiful here, once you sail into Mound Bay, a white shell midden is visible through the trees. This is an old First Nation site, and apparently there used to be a burial ground here. Once we were anchored, we headed to the shore. A kayak club meets here in the summer, there is a fire pit and the frame for a large tent. The whole meadow in front of the forest was littered with paper plates, that had scattered in the winter wind. I cleaned the place up, and found all these beautiful little wild violets growing underneath all that garbage. The entrance to the forest is very dark and secretive, but once you walk under the trees, giant old growth trees, everything becomes very quiet and still, the trees are massive here, and there is no undergrowth, just the odd young Sitka or Douglas Fir. It had a strange , almost too quiet feel to it,( remember the burial grounds). Everywhere are holes in the ground , homes for furry critters, not sure what, but the holes were a good size!!! Little orchids, Lady slippers, grow under the massive trunks of the trees, they just stand there, all by themselves, amazing little flowers, they are very hard to grow in any other kind of environment. We stayed for a while, just taking in this wonderful place.
Very much so appreciated.
Thank you every one, for sending warm, heartfelt wishes, after Annie died. I could , at the time , not write to every one, so i decided to write a tribute to Annie on the blog,so all of you could read it, thank you for showing love and compassion towards Bert and myself, we miss her very much.
