To Sea Otter inlet and Hakai beach.
We motored to Sea Otter inlet on October 2nd. A beautiful day again , but cold!!!! Fitz Hugh Sound was very choppy with the NW wind, but it didnt take us long to get there. We decided to go back to Hakai beach institute again, we loved it there, and there are more hiking trails we didnt go on yet. This time it also wouldnt be so busy any more. We went to Hakai the next day, cold wind blowing in Hakai Passage, there was quite an ocean swell there, and poor Annie became pretty sick, i think, because the waves were hitting the boat to the side. We asked permission that first night, if we could tie to the dock, and the caretaker said ,no problem!! We were the only boat, so the beach would be quiet too!!!! That evening we headed out for the sunset, how i love the feel and the immense vastness of the ocean, i could sit and watch it all day……

Leaving Shearwater on a beautiful, sunny day.
On September 28 we headed for Codville Lagoon, we had anchored there on the way north, but it was so busy there at the time, a lot of boats, and we didnt go on the trail that time. On saturday , the 29th, we hiked the trail to Sagar lake, there was a forecast for a gale that evening and the next day. The hiking trial is rough but oh so nice with old growth silver cedars, moss in all kinds of colors, and a very special atmosphere. We hiked for about 45 minutes, Bert in front, as i stop all the time, taking photos, and checking out every little bush and plant. I suddenly heard him say; “sand, beautiful sand”, and there, in front of us was Sagar lake, surrounded by a sand beach, not shell, but very fine, golden pink colored sand, it so reminded me of going to Margaret River in Australia where my family took me. The lake is 3 miles long, and i saw signs of beavers . The water color must have minerals in it, or maybe its from the cedars, a warm , reddish brown color. We had not seen any garbage on the trail, but here people had been camping, and left all their plastics lying around, i stuffed my pockets with it all, and we cleaned the beach. I saw bear tracks, Marten and Raccoons. The shore is lined with Sitka spruce, big, big trees, Alder and Birch. But, everything looks so wild, so beautiful, what an amazing spot. We hiked back after a few hours, and made it to the dinghy , which was now high and dry , up on shore…….tide had gone out. Yikes !! that thing is heavy with the engine attached!!!! It started raining and blowing, just as we came back to the boat, good timing. That night it blew very hard, we knew the anchor was well set, Bert had let out more chain too, but where we were , because of the surrounding hills, Williwaws come off the mountain, and they strike the boat sideways, even though her bow is into the wind. Bert stayed up all night on anchor watch, i made hot tea, coffee, snacks, slept a bit, but the boat heeled more then 30% each time with a williwaw, not Comfy!!!!! The wind finally slacked off to about 10 knots, so Bert could go to sleep, i then stayed up, to keep an eye on things.
